Meeting on ethical code delayed

JAKARTA: A plenary meeting at the House of Representatives building scheduled to pass the Code of Ethics for legislators on Thursday was delayed due to shortcomings in the draft code.

The Code of Ethics would be part of the revision to the House's present internal regulations.

"We still need to discuss several inputs from factions, but we are trying to finish it soon," House Speaker Akbar Tandjung told The Jakarta Post minutes after his arrival at the House building.

He said the legislators had to complete and pass the Code of Ethics because it had been mandated by a decree of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) at its annual meeting last year.

Deputy Speaker A.M. Fatwa said the plenary meeting would be adjourned until Oct. 17 to give legislators time to conduct further discussions.

Fatwa said that the legislators needed time to harmonize the wordings of the code. -- JP
