Medical school holds science week

JAKARTA: The University of Indonesia's school of medicine is holding its annual science week from Tuesday through to Sunday.

The event, which highlights the research achievements of the university's faculty and students over a year, is meant to encourage and instill a culture of research at the school.

Prizes are awarded for the top three scientific papers and posters, with students and faculty being judged separately.

To kick off the five-day event, faculty members presented the results of studies as diverse as how tomato juice effects male smokers, the reaction of rabbits to green tea, and gene analysis in congenital glaucoma.

Of the faculty research, a total of 37 posters and 28 research papers were selected to be showcased. The faculty posters will be on display until Thursday, when the top three winners will be announced.

Seven of the 28 papers have been published in international journals, with six being the results of collaborations between scientists at the university's faculty and researchers from other countries. Among the three papers already awarded prizes, two were joint studies.

A workshop on how to generate research topics, make research proposals, and get papers published, which will be open to the public for a fee of Rp 25,000, will be held on Sunday.

Researcher Ichramsjah Rahman, who delivered the keynote address, said "research work must continue and grow stronger in order for the university to be a true world class institution". -- JP
