Meat, eggs ample for the holidays
PURWOKERTO, Central Java: The country has enough meat and eggs for the coming festive seasons of Christmas and Idul Fitri, Director General for Farming Sofjan Sudrajat said on Friday.
"We have more than 36,000 heads of cattle that are ready to be consumed during the holiday season. They come from Yogyakarta, Central Java and Lampung," Sofjan said.
Some 20,000 chicken farms across the country are producing about 7.1 million chickens and 777 tons of eggs per day, he added.
As for Jakarta, he said the demand for the upcoming holidays would amount to 17,500 heads of cattle. "We will also bring in 5,000 more to have on reserve," he said.
The government is also ready to import meat from various countries, such as Australia.
The Idul Fitri Islamic holiday will fall on Jan. 8 next year, just two weeks after Christmas. (45/edt)
