Meat consumption in N. Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): The quantity of beef, buffalo and chicken
consumed by approximately 1.12 million residents in North Jakarta
reaches about 30 tons per day, while the consumption of pork
amounts to seven tons.

Head of North Jakarta Livestock Husbandry Suwito told Antara
over the weekend that the supply to meet the demand for meat in
the mayoralty comes from other regions in Java and outer islands.

"In North Jakarta there are 500 traditional meat traders
trained by the Livestock Husbandry Office on how to sell meat of
good quality," Suwito said.

Beef and buffalo is sold at between Rp 9,500 (US$4.31) and Rp
13,000 per kilogram, while chicken costs Rp 4,500 a kilogram. No
prices for pork were available. (hhr)
