Mayor opens school snack program

TANGERANG: Tangerang Mayor Wahidin Halim officially launched a new program on Saturday to control the snacks being sold at schools across the city.

The mayor said the municipality administration had already collected 50 snacks being sold at different schools and submitted them for laboratory examination.

"The laboratory tests showed that 100 percent of the food samples were free from heavy iron. However, they contained coloring and preservatives," he said.

The laboratory results also showed that some of the samples contained E. coli bacteria, which can cause diarrhea.

"I admit that my administration has yet to make sufficient efforts to control the food being sold at schools. Therefore, this program will expand to all of the schools in the city," Wahidin said. -- JP
