Mayor asked to review IDs repeal
Governor Surjadi Soedirdja has asked West Jakarta Mayor Sutardjianto to reconsider his plans to revoke identity cards for seasonal residents (Kipem).
"The governor asked the mayor to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of the revocation," City Hall spokesman Soesila Darmoadji said.
Sutardjianto sought Surjadi's approval for his plan to repeal the IDs, which were given by the city administration to seasonal residents such as laborers from West or Central Java who were working on construction projects.
Soesila said that the mayor wanted to revoke the IDs because the seasonal cards were ineffective and often abused by migrants who used them to look for permanent jobs in the city. (arf)
