Mayasari depot accused of polluting

TANGERANG: The Sukanegara Village Representative Body (BPD) in Cikupa district of Tangerang have asserted that lubricant motor oil from a local bus depot has polluted ground water in the area, forcing residents to buy drinking water.

"We suspect that toxic waste has been carelessly disposed of by industrial firms around the village, but residents have been particularly concerned with the lubricant oil waste flowing from the Mayasari bus depot in Bojong village," said BPD chairman Sayuti on Monday.

He said the waste found flowing through waterways in the village was mostly unused lubricant that could be categorized as dangerous chemical waste.

The Jakarta Post observed that the water flowing in the waterway on the right side of the Mayasari bus depot had turned dark and bluish.

Several local residents had complained that they could no longer consume water from their artesian wells as it had been contaminated with the waste and many have had to buy water over the past eight months.

"We can no longer use well water. We have to buy bottled water for drinking," Malik Anjar, one of the locals told the Post on Monday. --JP
