Mashburn jumper lifts Mavericks past Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Oregon (Reuter): Jamal Mashburn hit a jumper with under a minute left to snap a tie and the lowly Dallas Mavericks beat the Portland Trail Blazers 108-107 on Tuesday.

Dallas beat a team with a winning record for the first time this season and snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Blazers.

Jimmy Jackson had 24 points and Mashburn netted 20 for the Mavs, who won for only the second time in their last 21 games.

Clyde Drexler had 29 points and Rod Strickland added 22 points and 12 assists for the Blazers, who lost to Dallas at home for the first time since January 19, 1988.

At Cleveland, Bobby Phills and Terrell Brandon scored 22 points apiece to help the Cavaliers clinch a playoff berth with a 119-91 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks. Eric Murdock scored 20 points for Milwaukee. Vin Baker and Ken Norman scored 18 apiece for Milwaukee.

The Bucks, who lost their fifth straight and 16th in their last 18 games, committed 27 turnovers, leading to 41 points.

The Cavaliers are fifth in the Eastern Conference and will probably face Orlando in the first round of the playoffs.

Milwaukee has six losing streak of five games or more this season and has the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

In Chicago, Scottie Pippen had 25 points, nine rebounds and nine assists and Scott Williams added 18 points and 10 rebounds to help the Bulls beat the New Jersey Nets 111-105.

The Bulls, who ran their winning streak to eight games, extended their home win streak over the Nets to 19 games. The Nets haven't won at Chicago since January 7, 1986.

At Los Angeles, Chris Webber, Billy Owens and Chris Mullin scored 25 points apiece to lead the Golden State Warriors past the Lakers 128-117 for their third straight win.

Tony Smith scored 22 points and Sedale Threatt added 17 for the Lakers, who lost their third straight and remained four games behind Denver in the battle for the final Western Conference playoff spot with just seven games remaining.

In Denver, Kevin Johnson scored 25 points and Dan Majerle added 19 to lead the Phoenix Suns past the Nuggets 107-102.

The Suns (50-26) clinched their sixth straight 50-victory season. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scored 25 points for Denver.

At Utah, Karl Malone collected 21 points and 11 rebounds as the Jazz cruised past the Sacramento Kings 126-91.

Jeff Hornacek scored 20 points, Felton Spencer added 16 and John Stockton handed out 14 assists for the Jazz.
