Marsinah's death remembered

SURABAYA: About 100 activists from the Workers-People Society movement staged a drama in front of Brawijaya Military Command on Monday in commemoration of the murder of labor activist Marsinah.

The group demanded a thorough investigation into the murder, which it is alleged involved several military members.

"We want the case to be solved once and for all. We want an explanation," said Yudho, an activist.

Marsinah, who was murdered in May 1993, was a worker at watch factory PT Catur Putra Surya in Porong, East Java.

She was found dead in the Nganjuk area, allegedly killed for organizing rallies to demand better salaries.

The group met with Lt. Col. Nana Rohana of Brawijaya Military Command, who promised to channel their demands.

Separately, laborers from several companies held prayers in Wilangan forest in Nganjuk where Marsinah's battered remains were located. (nur/edt)
