Marlina breaks junior record
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia's Marlina broke a junior world record at the 1997 Asian Power lifting Championship in Chang Hua, Chinese Taipei, which was staged from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3.
Marlina, who competed in the women's 48 kgs division, lifted a total of 412.5 kgs, 30 kgs more than the old record of 382.5 kgs lifted by Chang Lai Hsiu of Chinese Taipei and also broke the world record of 402.5 kgs produced by Yamskich Elena of Russia.
Marlina lifted 162.5 kgs in the squat, compared to 155.0 kgs by Bitebaeva of Kazakhstan. In the bench press, she recorded 100.0 kgs, surpassing the old record of 92.5 kgs made by TS Watanabe of Japan.
In the championship -- which featured Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Hongkong, the Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, India, Pakistan and Uzbekhistan -- Indonesia won eight golds, five silvers and three bronzes.
Indonesia only sent four lifters; Marlina, Mingguriaty in the women's 56kgs, Sahroni in the men's 82.5kgs and Taufik in the men's 125kgs. (yan)
