Marble mine closed in E. Nusa Tenggara

MAUMERE, East Nusa Tenggara: A marble mine belonging to PT Karya Asta Alam (KAA) in Netpala village, North Molo district in South Central Timor regency was closed for six months following protests from local tribes.

Company director Tommy Sianto said the decision to temporarily close the mine have been discussed with its 50 employees and that the local administration was discussing the matter with Oematan tribe who are against the mine's operation.

"I received information directly from Governor Piet Alexander Tallo about the closure ... But it's not a definite termination. Further observation is underway," Tommy said about the closure which occurred on Friday.

The company's operation was allegedly causing environmental damage, according to some locals. It produces about 2,500 cubic meters of marble per month. (yac/edt)
