Many workers still uninsured

TANGERANG (JP): Many companies in Tangerang have yet to register their employees for the mandatory Jamsostek social security program, an official said on Monday.

"So far in Tangerang there are only 91,000 workers listed in the Jamsostek program. We believe that the actual number of workers is far larger than this," the chief of Jamsostek's Tangerang office Suyono said on Monday.

Employee enrollment in the program is stipulated in Labor Law No. 3/1992.

However, his office has been unable to gather accurate data on the number of companies and workers in Tangerang due to significant changes brought on by the economic turmoil of the past three years.

"Many companies were closed and did not report their business status. While many other businesses also opened but have yet to report their company profile and number of workers," he said. (41/edt)
