Many teenager AIDS/HIV victims

SEMARANG, Central Java: A health official says that 15 percent of Indonesia's 390 people suffering from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) already have full-blown Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) are teenagers.

Antara quoted Dr. Nardho Gunawan, head of the Ministry of Health's Directorate of Community Health as saying yesterday that there was no cause for alarm yet, but that more effort to prevent the spread of AIDS among young people is needed.

He blamed the growing promiscuity among urbanites for the spread of the disease. "Teenagers should be taught about safe sex," he said. "We need the support of the authorities for this campaign to go from urban centers to rural areas."
