Many students fail to register

BOGOR (JP): Out of the 2,638 students admitted to the Bogor Institute of Agriculture for the 1998/1999 academic year, 200 have yet to register.

Amiruddin Saleh, the institute's spokesman, said: "It is feared those who have not yet registered are suffering from financial troubles due to the economic crisis," he said Tuesday.

Amiruddin said that the institute decided to extend the registration period until Sept. 1 in a bid to give them a chance to register.

The academic year usually starts in July.

He explained that the institute had decided to exempt students from poor families from paying their tuition fees.

The 2,638 students were admitted after passing the entrance exams for state universities.

Amiruddin said new students seeking the tuition-fee exemption were required to submit documents from their subdistrict office, stating that they were from a poor family.

The documents were needed to help the institute decide whether they are eligible for the exemption or not, he added. (24/jun)
