Many roads in bad condition

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: At least 24 kilometers of the main south coastal road is in poor condition and may not be entirely safe for the heavy traffic which usually occurs during the upcoming holiday exodus.

Among the damaged roads are the main streets Jl. Raya Sidareja in Karangpucung, Jl. Raya Ajibarang and Jl. Raya Karanglewas. While streets prone to flooding are Jl. A. Yani in Sidareja, JL. Raya Patimuan and Jl. Kedung Reja.

The south coastal road is a key route connecting four provinces -- West, Central and East Java as well as Yogyakarta.

"We've informed the ministry of public works office about the damaged roads but no action has been taken over the matter," Banyumas Police chief Col. Carel Rissa Kota said on Monday

"So we urge holidaymakers to stay alert". (45/edt)
