Mandarin workers stage strike

JAKARTA (JP): Nearly 300 employees from the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta hotel staged a strike yesterday over several demands that the management has yet to meet.

A housewife who wanted to order a cake told The Jakarta Post yesterday that the hotel was not taking any orders because most of the bakery's employees were on strike.

The strike was said to have started at 7:30 a.m. in all departments of the hotel except the kitchen, which was still cooking for the guests.

According to an RCTI report at 6:30 p.m. yesterday, the morning shift employees were asking the management not to fire hotel employees without clear justification and not to hire too many expatriate managers.

The Post was unable to reach the hotel's management or public relations officials for comment but one of the managers who asked to remain anonymous denied that any strike had been called.

"There was no strike. It was only a problem with the management," she said.(yns/14)
