Man suspected in brother's killing

JAKARTA (JP): Senen Police detectives have arrested a man for killing his older brother after he refused to help him collect a debt, an officer said on Friday.

Second Lt. Yan Kris Allo said police arrested the 18-year-old suspect, Haris, as he hid in a house on Jl. Anggrek in Central Jakarta.

"We seized the 40-centimeter-long samurai (sword) he used to stab his older brother Heri," Allo said.

The brothers' uncle, Rachmat, said Haris asked Heri, 25, to take him to visit Bony, a friend who formerly owed money to their late father.

"Heri was resting in their house on Friday morning because he was sick. He refused to take Haris to Bony's house. Apparently, Haris was unable to accept his refusal," Rachmat said.

"Both were then involved in an intense argument."

Rachmat said Bony borrowed the money two years ago to start a business.

"Haris is jobless and he desperately needed the money. He intended to collect money from Bony."

He said he and other locals were alerted by the sound of the brothers arguing.

"When we arrived, we saw Haris had already stabbed Heri in the right side of his neck with a samurai."

Rachmat said he took Heri to the emergency room of Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital's in a bajaj (three-wheel motorized vehicle).

"But I knew he was already dead on our way to the hospital." (06)
