Man shot for stealing hens

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Police shot and killed a man who resisted arrest on charges of the theft of four hens in Sungai Tabuk subdistrict.

Spokesman for the South and Central Kalimantan police command, Lt. Col. Suryo Sudewo, said the suspected thief was a notorious repeat offender.

Suryo said the man escaped from the police escort on their way to the local police precinct and ignored warning shots. When he stumbled and fell, he tried to snatch a gun from the police, he said.

"It was during the ensuing tumult that he was wounded in the left side of his chest," he said as quoted by Antara.

The four officers involved in the incident are being questioned. (pan)
