Man shot for resisting arrest

JAKARTA (JP): Police shot and wounded a man when they went to arrest him at a house in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, Monday on charges of buying stolen goods.

South Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto said police shot the man, Tomy Sugiharto, in his right leg when he resisted arrest. Two warning shots had been fired, he said.

The 43-year-old Tomy, of Jl. Warung Jengkol, in Cakung, East Jakarta, was taken to Kramatjati Police Hospital.

Sisno said Tomy had had a pistol tucked into his belt when he was arrested.

He said police had been looking for Tomy since Sunday when they seized a Mitsubishi truck containing a Honda Astrea motorcycle believed to be stolen.

They arrested Tomy after he returned from Jepara, in Central Java, Sisno said.

Police later seized 10 telephones, a Kijang van and car documents. They also confiscated electrical equipment, knives, toy guns, tools -- which they said had been used to steal cars -- and 10 ID cards in Tomy's name.

A sergeant at the Pasar Minggu Police subprecinct said officers were investigating whether Tomy had been involved in producing fake mobile phone identification cards. (jun)
