Man killed for requesting funds

PEKANBARU, Riau: A farmer has stabbed an activist to death as he was upset by the way the victim asked him for funds for an organization.

Bambang Wijaya, an oil palm farmer, admitted to attacking P. Purba, 20, an executive of the Riau Forum for United Indonesia (Foribet), in Libo Jaya village, Bengkalis regency, Riau, on Wednesday because the victim forced him to provide funds for the organization, Antara reported Friday.

Police said the victim, along with another member of the organization, E.M. Purba, were raising funds from house to house visits.

"They asked Bambang directly to give them some money, which made him angry. They were soon involved in a heated argument, which ended with Bambang drawing his knife and stabbing the uninvited guests," a police officer said.

P. Purba died instantly while E.M. Purba was seriously wounded.

Bambang is now under police custody. (sim)
