Man killed after threatening wife

JAKARTA (JP): A 42-year-old man was beaten to death by neighbors of his parents in Babakan subdistrict, Setu, Bekasi, on Saturday.

Mulyadi was beaten by the mob and died at the scene after he repeatedly pelted stones at his parents' house and threatened to kill his wife, who was staying in the house after a quarrel with her husband last week.

Local police and witnesses said they had no idea which individual actually killed the man since none of the angry residents were armed.

City police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis quoted witnesses as saying that Mulyadi and his wife were involved in a heated quarrel last Wednesday. His wife left the house and moved in with her parents-in-law for protection.

Saturday's fatal incident took place at around 4 p.m., when Mulyadi went to the house wanting to see his wife.

Officer Lubis said Mulyadi became angry when his wife refused to see him.

"The victim was even more angry to know that his parents defended their daughter-in-law," Lubis said.

Mulyadi then went outside the house and waited for his wife to come out. He reportedly repeatedly shouted that he would kill her if she dared to show herself.

Mulyadi's parents asked their son to keep quiet and not embarrass the whole family. The son became further incensed and started to pelt stones and other objects at the house.

Mulyadi's elderly parents started to panic and shouted for help, alerting nearby residents who rushed to the house and tried to apprehend Mulyadi.

However, Mulyadi resisted and tried to attack those who came closer.

"In a bid to knock him down, residents hit Mulyadi," Lubis said.(emf)
