Man arrested for fake ATM cards

JAKARTA: Police arrested on Wednesday a suspect allegedly involved in the production of dozens of fake Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards enabling their users to steal cash from the accounts of banks' customers

The suspect, John Petrus (43), whose identity card stated that he lived on Jl. Gelas Dalam No.61, Medan, North Sumatra, was arrested by city police detectives from the economic crimes section on Wednesday evening at the Hotel Aston Atrium in Central Jakarta.

The police, as reported by Detik.com, seized from him 10 fake ATM cards, similar to those issued by BCA, HSBC, BII, Lippo, Danamon and Mandiri, along with 10 bank books.

The police also confiscated equipment which could likely be used in producing the fake ATM cards including an encoding device, a laptop, a data reading device, and a compact disc player.

John revealed that he had drawn cash from bank accounts belonging to dozens of people. He was also preparing to take cash from 15 other bank accounts.--JP
