Malaysia's Vision 2020

When Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi lamented that Malaysia would remain a Third World country with First World infrastructure if Malaysians do not change their mindset, many shared his exasperation.

We set our Vision 2020 goals when many other Third World countries were still trying to settle their tribal wars. We invested billions of ringgit in building and upgrading infrastructure when others are still trying to deliver clear drinking water to their rural poor.

But sad to say, many of our people have not made the corresponding cultural mindshift. What use is the most beautiful airport in the region if our baggage collection system is slow, (our) taxi service poor. The West is what it is today because of its relentless quest for excellence.

That, together with discipline and respect for other's rights, are no doubt the hallmark of a civilized society. Are we ready for the quantum-leap?
