Maid killed in botched robbery

TANGERANG: Nina, 20, a housemaid who worked in the State Secretariat Housing Complex in Panunggangan Utara subdistrict, Pinang district of Tangerang municipality, was killed on Friday morning during a robbery attempt.

At the same time as the victim was being taken to Tangerang General Hospital morgue, the suspect, Eko Priyadi, 20, was rushed to the emergency unit at the same hospital after he was attacked by local residents.

Police chief of detectives Adj. Kustanto said the suspect, a garbage man who lives in the complex, arrived at the house of Nina's employers at 10:30 a.m. and asked where her employers were.

Nina told him that the lady of the house, Titin Sumiarti, was still teaching at state Senior High School 1 in Tangerang and her husband Wawan Gunawan was still working at the State Secretariat in Jakarta.

Eko then reportedly pulled out a machete and demanded that Nina show him where her employers kept their jewelry.

Nina refused and was hit on the head with the machete and dragged upstairs.

Gita, 14, the daughter of Titin and Wawan, who was in her bed room and witnessed the incident. She locked her room, jumped out the window and sought help.

Local residents soon arrived and attacked Eko, but Nina's life could not be saved.

The suspect told the police that he wanted to rob the house because he needed money to marry a woman in his village in Central Java on Monday.--JP
