Mahakam festival begins Sept. 29

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: The three-day Mahakam Festival
2000 is scheduled to begin here on Sept. 29 in a bid to boost
tourism in the province, Fachruddin Djafrie, head of local
tourism agency said.

According to Fachruddin the festival is expected to lure both
local and foreign tourists, and will feature various activities
along the Mahakam river such as jetskiing, boat racing and a
decorative boats competition. A kite show and traditional music
ensemble will also be held.

"The agency is currently looking for sponsorship partners from
various parties for the festival's activities," he was quoted by
Antara as saying on Monday.

He added that other traditional and cultural exhibitions from
Sulawesi, Java and Kalimantan will also be performed during the
