Lurking danger

In response to Mr. Fachrudin's letter (The Jakarta Post, June 7, 1996), I notice that the real danger hiding behind the spreading of English language in Indonesia hasn't been fully vocalized. The dubbing of all foreign programs represents only one aspect of the whole problem.

Presently, many countries have done a complete turnabout in regard to the asphyxiating presence of the English language, even inside the UK fortress itself. Recent news from Wales said that students of Alberystwith's university firmly want Welsh as the official language instead of English.

I agree that English cannot be ignored, but on the other hand it cannot be considered of capital importance. Overall, it cannot break domineeringly into Indonesian homes through TV programs.
