Lottery hopefuls lose their cool

BANDUNG: Residents set ablaze a motorcycle and a car in front of a reputed lottery site late Monday. They were reportedly incensed because there was no announcement of lottery results at the building, a former showroom.

The incident took place a day after the township branch of the Association of Islamic Students (HMI) demanded the legislative council take action against gambling.

"Activists will take care of the matter themselves if gambling is still rampant within a week," a HMI member said, charging that police were not doing anything to stop the vice. They said gambling was burgeoning among members of low-income groups.

West Java Police chief Maj. Gen. Chaeruddin Ismail asserted that his officers did not tolerate gambling in any form. (43)
