Looters blamed for blackouts

MEDAN, North Sumatra (JP): Blackouts in large areas of Medan and nearby Binjai on Monday were blamed on the continued theft of equipment belonging to the state-run electricity company, PLN.

The head of PLN's provincial branch, Agus Pranoto, said that missing iron supports from three towers in Langkat were stolen, which led to the collapse of the towers and the blackouts. He was addressing the local council here on Wednesday.

Agus said the office recorded 70 thefts from January to November, leading to Rp 350 million in losses. At least Rp 500 million was needed to repair the towers, he said. (21)
