Look back in anger 2

* McEnroe's behavior had not improved a year later. He argued with both a linesmen and the umpire during a semifinal match against Rod Frawley, earning himself a US$5,000 fine. McEnroe ended Borg's five-year dominance at Wimbledon in the final that year, but was then absent at the traditional Champions' Ball. Women's champion Chris Evert said in her speech at the dinner, "I am sorry John McEnroe could not be here and, as an American, I apologize for him."

* Few women players have been admonished for their tempers, although Billie Jean King, Virginia Wade and Martina Navratilova were all known for their short fuses. An interesting showdown occurred last year in Wimbledon's first round between American veteran Pam Shriver and Australian Rachel McQuillan.

* The two had met the previous week during the Birmingham warm-up tournament. Rain had stopped play there and when the players returned to court, McQuillan walked over to the chair Shriver had used previously and put her bags down. Shriver confronted her and McQuillan responded, according to Shriver, with "I only wanted to get a better view of my family. What's your problem? You're a haggard old fossil who should retire."

Shriver then showed her there was still life in the old girl yet by beating McQuillan at both Birmingham and Wimbledon.
