Lombok provocateur on trial

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara : Prosecutors here on Saturday demanded a one-year sentence for the man whom they claimed incited the January riots on Lombok island.

Prosecutor Kundarto told the court that the man, identified by his initials IS, had incited the riot by making a provocative speech at a gathering prior to the outbreak of violence.

After hearing the speech, the crowd that had gathered to listen to it ran amok and started throwing stones at houses of worship in the area, the court was told.

The court will convene again on Wednesday to hear the man's defense, Antara reported.

At least 10 churches and other buildings were burned during the riot.(10)
