Lokon volcano getting active

MANADO: A North Sulawesi vulcanologist has warned Kinilow and Kakaskasen villagers living near Lokon volcano to stay alert because the mountain was showing signs of activity.

The mountain, some 25 kilometers from Manado, last erupted in 1991.

It has been registering moderate levels of steaming and crater glow since Wednesday, Jemmy Runtuwene told Antara on Friday.

A permanent danger zone of three kilometers around the volcano, which includes Tinoor village, is being closely observed, he said.

The mountain has been off-limits for hikers since its eruption in 1991, which claimed the life of Swiss national, Vivian Clavel. (prb)
