Local KPUs members wait to get paid

YOGYAKARTA: They might be in charge of holding direct election of regional heads in Yogyakarta, but some members and staff at Yogyakarta's General Elections Committee (KPU) have not received their salaries since January.

While waiting for money from state and provincial budgets, they have had to fund election preparation activities, using loans.

Head of the committee's logistic division in Bantul, Soewandi D. Subrata, said on Thursday that the loan would be used to pay salaries as well as operational costs. Each month, the office needed Rp 19.5 million (US$2,110).

The same situation is also happening in Sleman. "For us (committee members) it's ok, but it's hard for our temporary staff," said chairman of the committee's branch in Sleman, Abdul Haris. -- JP
