Live mortar found at Bekasi dump

BEKASI: A security guard at the Bantar Gebang dump in Bekasi found a live Russian-made mortar on his desk on Tuesday afternoon.

Yanto Suhendar, 35, said on Wednesday he found the mortar on his desk at about 4:30 p.m. and immediately reported it to the Bantar Gebang Police.

Bantar Gebang Police detectives chief First Insp. Badari suspected the mortar had been found by scavengers. They had probably deposited the mortar at the guard office, he said.

"We didn't find the launcher but the mortar's head that we found was still active," Badari said.

The National Police immediately send its bomb squad to the dump. The squad took the bomb to the National Police Headquarters for further investigation. -- JP
