List all fiesta activities, says Surjadi

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja yesterday
called on his officials to list all activities related to the
celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence
Day.

Surjadi delivered his speech yesterday in front of city
officials from district chiefs to vice-governors at Monas square.

Surjadi asked all parties involved in the celebrations to be
responsible, particularly in matters of administration.

"We have to record all, the successes, the failures and
obstacles as a reference for coming celebrations," Surjadi said.

Surjadi also asked the city officials to use the present
momentum, while the people are still moved by the spirit of
independence, to give better service to Jakartans.

"Good service is fast, polite and cheap. As civil servants, we
have to improve our services by giving good service to the
people," he said.

Surjadi also expressed his appreciation of city officials and
citizens who participated in ensuring the success of all
celebration programs for the 50th anniversary of Indonesia's
Independence Day held in the city.

"If were are dissatisfactions and failures during the
celebrations, that is usual and it will be balanced by the
successes," Surjadi said.

Surjadi said the decorations installed by citizens throughout
the city could be removed after Aug. 31. For those who want to
keep their decorations up there will be no restrictions, Surjadi
said.

"Those installed by the city administration will be removed at
the end of September," Surjadi said.

The celebration of the city's 468th anniversary and the
nation's 50th Independence Day will be held until the end of this
year, he said.

As a contribution to the celebration, the Jakarta city
administration launched a "Beautiful Jakarta by Night" campaign,
designed to keep Jakarta "alive" around the clock by requesting
residents and managers of high-rise buildings to install
decorative lamps.

The idea was supported by the City Council and the state-owned
electricity company PLN, which decided to charge only one third
of the usual rate for electricity consumed by the decorative
lamps. (01)
