Liquor on sale, fireworks banned

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The local authority has freed the sale of liquor in stores and shopping centers for Christmas and New Year, but is standing firm on the banning of fireworks.

The decision came as a surprise to the town's residents because the authorities have always banned both from sale.

Local police chief Lt. Col. (Pol) Sentot Sukandano said that the decision to allow liquor sales was made following the deliberation of local community leaders some time ago.

Fireworks were banned because they are dangerous and harmful to other people, he said.

However, the authority's prohibition of fireworks sales does not keep its vendors from selling their goods discreetly, Antara reported. (08)
