LIPI offers Nippon Foundation fellowships

JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) announced on Friday that six fellowships from the Nippon Foundation were available for next year.

The Asian Public Intellectuals (API) fellowships are open to those working in the field of shaping public opinion and influencing policy, such as academics, media professionals, artists and non-governmental organization leaders.

Selected fellows can pursue projects in Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines or Thailand, or a combination of these countries, for up to 12 months.

They will learn what their counterparts are doing in different cultural and ethnic contexts, generate theoretical ideas to cope with social and economic change, and build intellectual networks for the future.

"The aim is to revive the Asian identities or values among Asian young intellectuals," LIPI chairman Taufik Abdullah said in announcing the fellowships on Friday.

The scholarships are divided into senior fellowships for those with experience in research and professional activities, and junior fellowships for those under the age of 35.

Further information can be obtained from LIPI's Center for Social and Cultural Studies. (09)
