Lindskog wins Olympic Golf Championship

JAKARTA (JP): Swedish Stephan A. Lindskog won the Olympic Golf Championship at the Gunung Geulis Country Club, near Bogor, on Friday.

Jakarta-based golfer Lindskog won Rp 22 million and the crystal Bohemia trophy. He scored a total of 286 points (72-69-74-71).

Lindskog said he was happy with the victory and only wanted to play safe and not make any blunders.

"I wanted to play safe and not make any blunders," said Lindskog, who also won the Bali Open in 1997 and Matoa Invitational in 1998. He is also the coach for the women's golf players for the 20th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games team.

Lindskog said his victory at the tournament will be a sweet memory for him.

"I want to share my victory with my wife Ingrid. This is a wedding gift for Ingrid, as we just got married two months ago. It was at this golf course where I met Ingrid," Lindskog said.

Kasiadi, the winner of last year's top national ranking tournament, took second place scoring 290 points (71-71-74-74). Maan Nasim, who won the 1999 Bukit Darmo Open, was third with 292 (75-69-73-75). Kasiadi collected Rp 10 million and Maan Rp 6.8 million.

The Olympic golf championship offered a total cash prize of Rp 100 million (US$1,600) and was participated in by 300 golfers, both professionals and amateurs. Of the 300, six came from Malaysia, the Philippines, Japan and Sweden.

The six included professional Malaysians Arief Sarji, Rashid Ismail and Shaifu Bahri, Japanese Daisuke Tsuchiyama, Lindskog and amateur Filipino Bennadict.

The tournament started on July 27 and ends on July 31. It was not participated in by golfers from the SEA Games team.

Saturday's tournament will only be played by Indonesian amateurs, and the winners will receive cash and trophies.
