Light sentence sought for policeman
JAKARTA: A military prosecutor on Friday demanded only 11
months in prison for First Brig. Pambudi, a member of the West
Jakarta Police department whose stray bullet killed a civilian in
2001.
The prosecutor, Maj. Sigit Prasodjo, told a hearing in the
city's military court that the defendant, who is a member of the
police Mobile Brigade, must be jailed for negligence of his duty,
which claimed the life of Yudianto on Feb. 28, 2001.
Yudianto's mother Mariana, who attended the trial, fainted in
the courtroom shortly after hearing the lenient sentence demand.
The lawyers representing Yudianto's family from the Jakarta
Legal Aid Institute (LBH) strongly protested the light sentence
sought by the military prosecutor.
"It (the demand) is far from anything resembling justice," the
LBH said in a press statement.
It said the light sentence demand shows the security
authorities were not serious in enforcing the law against their
members who violated the law.
The lawyers urged the Military Court to hand a heavier
sentence for the defendant. --JP

TANGERANG: Natalia, 31, a resident from Poris Indah housing
complex, Cipondoh district, Tangerang municipality, screamed
hysterically when she got home from work at 5 p.m. on Thursday,
as she found her husband Andre, 37, hanging from the kitchen door
frame.
Her scream summoned several neighbors who went over and helped
take down the body of Andre, who had apparently hanged himself
with a length of plastic rope.
Natalia said that her husband had not complained about
anything in particular, but she was aware that since he quit from
his workplace recently, her husband had been reluctant to talk
and had been silent most of the time.
Late on Thursday evening, Feriandi, 35, a resident from
Kerocong Permai housing development, Jatiuwung, died when his
head was crushed at Jl. Daan Mogot kilometer 24, Batu Ceper
district.
Slamet, an eyewitness, said that the victim was riding his
Honda motorbike at high speed and was trying to overtake a
container truck heading from Jakarta to Tangerang.
"But his motorcycle bumped into the truck, he
lost control and fell, and the truck's rear tires ran over his
head," said the cigarette kiosk owner.
The victim died instantly, while the truck driver escaped.
Tangerang Traffic Police deputy chief Titik Setiowaty said that
as of Friday afternoon, the police could not identify the driver,
who was still at large.--JP
