Levi's band contest aimed at students

JAKARTA (JP): At least 10 senior high school bands will participate in a music competition at the Bengkel Nightpark discotheque on Jl. Jend. Sudirman in Central Jakarta on Nov. 30.

Kiki Rizki, an executive of PT Levi Strauss Indonesia, said yesterday that Tawuran Music Levi's (Levi's Music Brawl) was aimed at providing a stage and opportunities for students to develop their musical talents.

"We're also trying to give the word tawuran (brawl) a more positive meaning," Kiki said.

The organizers -- Levi Strauss, Prambors radio station and Bengkel Nightpark -- plan to hold the contest every year, she said.

Judith Pang, a member of the organizing committee, said 49 schools had already applied to compete in the contest's audition on Nov. 20.

The 10 bands selected at the audition will be pitted against each other in the Nov. 30 contests, she said.

PT Levi Strauss Indonesia is to donate Rp 500,000 (US$150) to each of the student organizations, whose bands make the top 10, to support musical activities at the schools, Judith said.

The winner of the contest will receive a trophy and Rp 1.5 million; the second placegetter gets a trophy plus Rp 1 million; and the third gets a trophy and Rp 750,000, she said.

Tickets costs Rp 15,000 each, which includes a welcome drink, and are now on sale at Prambors and Bengkel Nightpark.

Prambors is to give away 300 tickets to listeners between Nov. 24 and Nov. 28, Judith said. (jun)
