Lecturer presses on with lawsuit

SALATIGA, Central Java: Arief Budiman, the outspoken lecturer
at the Christian Satyawacana University, has given the college's
administrators until Sept. 25 to retract a reprimand letter
against him or face him in court.

Arief said he has filed a lawsuit with the local court,
charging that the letter issued by college administrators
besmirched his good name.

Arief said he was never given a chance to defend himself
before the sanction was imposed on him, apparently because of
statements he made to the public about the way the college
elected its rector earlier this year.

Besides Arief, another staff lecturer, Ariel Heryanto, was
also reprimanded for the same reason.

Meanwhile 66 staff lecturers have signed a petition backing
Arief's petition. (har/emb)
