Lecturer fired over UMI attack

MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: The Indonesian Muslim University (UMI) fired on Thursday a lecturer and expelled two students over their roles in the police attack on the university recently, which left dozens of students seriously injured.

The lecturer in question was First Insp. Erwanto, who was previously held responsible by a police disciplinary committee for his role in the bloody incident. His subordinates in the police unit he led in Makassar were involved in the attack. He also taught criminology at the university.

The two students were Eddy and Muhammad Yamin, who were accused of taking hostage First Brig. Sudirman, which resulted in the violent attack by police personnel. -- JP
