Leafs win, birthday gift for coach Quinn

The Toronto Maple Leafs gave coach Pat Quinn something to celebrate on his 60th birthday by defeating the reeling Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 Wednesday.

The 2002 Stanley Cup finalist Hurricanes are 2-12-1-2 in their last 17 games.

Mats Sundin scored Toronto's first two goals, both on powerplays, and Alexander Mogilny notched the game-winner with just over three minutes remaining. Mogilny also assisted on both Sundin markers.

Jan Hlavac netted Carolina's first goal and Ron Francis added a shorthanded marker at 18:38 of the final frame.

Ed Belfour notched the win, his 22nd of the season, in the Toronto goal.

Quinn, the NHL's senior coach, was pitting his wits against the youngest -- 35-year-old Paul Maurice.

The last time the teams met was in the Eastern Conference finals won by Carolina in six games.

In Dallas, the surging Stars picked up two goals from Jere Lehtinen and singles from Sergei Zubov and Stephane Robidas to down the Calgary Flames 4-1.

Scott Nichol had Calgary's lone goal, his second of the season spoiling Dallas netminder Marty Turco's shutout bid.

Turco is now unbeaten in 12 games and is a perfect 9-0 against Canadian-based clubs this season.

The Stars, who lead all NHL teams with 72 points, have lost just once in their last 16 games, going 12-1-3.

In Edmonton, Jason Chimera scored twice as the Oilers coasted to a 5-1 triumph over the Minnesota Wild.

Recent call-up Jarret Stoll, in his first NHL shift, assisted on Chimera's first goal 3:46 into the game.

Dan Cleary, Shawn Horcoff and Todd Marchant also tallied for Edmonton. Jim Dowd netted Minnesota's lone goal to spoil Tommy Salo's shutout bid.

In Anaheim, Steve Rucchin snapped a 2-2 tie with a goal at 14:48 of the final period to give the Mighty Ducks a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.

Paul Kariya and Adam Oates also tallied for Anaheim while Mike Fisher and Todd White replied for Ottawa.
