Leadership woes

The Jakarta Post's Sept. 10 editorial's concluding sentence: "Who is really in charge of the country now?" is easy to answer: the opportunistic national leaders, civilians and servicemen alike. The question will also sound like "Who owns the country?" The answer is the same.

If you go back through the 54-year history of this country, you will find too many self-proclaimed national leaders, politicians, bureaucrats, servicemen and business people. Want proof? See how they live!

It is very rare nowadays to find an Indonesian with a moral obligation to the country. It is very sad that we as Indonesians have to set aside a sense of belonging and sense of responsibility for these self-centered interests. Poor republic!
