Lawyer arrested for fraud

DENPASAR, Bali: A woman lawyer has allegedly defrauded Rp 4.3 billion (US$500,000) from mostly foreign clients who were interested in investing in the resort island, a police official says.

The Bali Police's chief of detectives, Sr. Comr. Boy Salamuddin, said on Monday that Aryana Sari, a lawyer who originally hailed from Jakarta, had been arrested for fraud based on complaints from 10 victims, eight of whom were from Germany, the Netherlands and Britain.

"The suspect offered the victims help to invest in Bali, at times by marrying the victims. But it turned out that she took their money without fulfilling her obligations," Boy said.

The suspect has also been accused of misappropriating land and title certificates belonging to the victims. -- Antara
