Kunaefi buried at heroes cemetery
BANDUNG: Former West Java governor A'ang Kunaefi died on Friday at Pondok Indah Hospital in Jakarta at that age of 77. His body was buried later in the day at the Cikutra Heroes Cemetery here in a military ceremony.
After a brief posting as chief of the province's military command, Kunaefi took the gubernatorial post for two five-year terms starting from 1975. At the end of his second term, he was named Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, a post he held for three years.
Kunaefi subsequently chaired the Islamic Propagation Council from 1989 to 1997. Up to the time of his death he was a commissioner with the leading cement producer PT Indocement.
One of his sons, Tresna Darmawan, said Kunaefi had suffered a heart attack before he was admitted to the hospital. In November 1997, he underwent heart surgery at Mt. Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
Mourners attending the funeral included former minister of home affairs, West Java Governor Yogie S. Memet, and former minister of education Wiranto Arismunandar. House of Representatives Speaker Akbar Tandjung and Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly Ginandjar Kartasamita conveyed their condolences at Kunaefi's residence.
Kunaefi is survived by his wife and 10 children. (43)
