KPU told to beware of hackers

JAKARTA: An official called on the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Thursday to beware of computer hackers who could sabotage preparations for next year's elections.

The governor of the National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas), Ermaya Suradinata, said on Thursday that hackers could sabotage the computer network used by the KPU.

His statement came one day after military chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto warned of possible sabotage during the elections.

Ermaya said hackers were able to disrupt the Internet network in the United States, so there was strong reason for Indonesia to beware of hackers.

He added that the computer network of Lemhannas had once been damaged by a hacker.

Ermaya suggested that the KPU take steps to anticipate and ward off electronic sabotage. -- Antara
