KPU to summon doctors over health reports

MANADO, North Sulawesi: A poll watchdog said on Monday it planned to summon doctors responsible for medical checkups for candidates contesting the general election, after allegations some of them had taken drugs.

The doctors would be summoned immediately, to confirm allegations that 70 out of the 1,500 legislative candidates had consumed drugs, Manado Elections Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) chairman Frangkie Mokodompis said.

The initiative began when the Panwaslu received medical reports from doctors, which said all 1,500 legislative candidates were mentally and physically fit to contest the election, Frangkie said.

The Election Law rules that all legislative candidates must attach medical reports when applying to the General Elections Commission (KPU).

However recent allegations made said 70 of the candidates had consumed drugs.

"We are going find out whether these charges are true," Mokodompis said. -- JP
