KPK told to verify candidates' wealth

JAKARTA: Noted Muslim scholar Nurcholish Madjid urged the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Saturday to verify the wealth reports submitted by presidential candidates and their running mates to the General Elections Commission (KPU) to ensure the formation of a clean government.

Nurcholish made the call on the sidelines of a seminar on the 2004-2009 presidential term here on Saturday.

Popularly known as Cak Nur, the scholar said verification was necessary to track down the sources of the candidates' wealth and campaign funds. The task could be carried out by either the KPK or the KPU, as both were authorized to do so.

"The KPU should disqualify any candidate who has been proven to have used illegal funds for their campaign," Cak Nur said. -- Antara
