KPK meets Akbar Tandjung

JAKARTA: Five leaders of the newly formed Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) met on Monday with House Speaker Akbar Tandjung to explain their work plans.

KPK chairman Taufiequrrahman (Taufiq) Ruki said the five introduced themselves to Akbar, who is awaiting the Supreme Court's verdict on his appeal against a three-year jail sentence for corruption.

Taufiq declined to comment on Akbar's case, saying that he would not intervene in any legal cases.

He commented that eradicating corruption required commitment from high-ranking officials and national leaders.

KPK member Erry Riyana Hardjapamekas, meanwhile, said the commission had already received about 30 reports on alleged graft cases from the people, as well as non-governmental organizations.

Erry said the commission would study the reports before discussing them with the National Police and the Attorney General's Office. -- JP
