Kite festival on Sunday

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta administration will hold a traditional kite festival at the Monument National (Monas) park on Sunday, the city's official news portal Beritajakarta.com reported on Friday.

The festival is aimed at conserving national culture while promoting the public park as the city's main tourist destination.

Head of the municipality's tourism agency, Sri Yuniarti, said the event will be opened by Governor Sutiyoso at about 9 p.m.

"There will be exhibition from national kite flyers groups, including the Merindo and Peria from Bandung," she added.

In the competition, she said, the juries will focus on the creativity and skill of the participants in making and flying their own kites.

Interested residents, including those outside Central Jakarta, can reach the festival committee at the municipality's tourism agency by phoning 385-0322 or by email to jakiteliers@yahoo.com. -- JP
